Cannabis Culture In Alberta
Alberta is a top market for cannabis, with sales exceeding $123 million in 2019. Despite having almost 10 million fewer people than the province of Ontario, Alberta outpaced them for sales in the first year of legalization!
Despite some municipal hesitancy, many Albertans have embraced cannabis culture. In 2018, they kicked off legalization with the country’s first legal cannabis competition, called Hempfest Cannabis Expo. It’s still a big draw for other international cannabis hotspots, like Colorado and Amsterdam.
Of course, Alberta has so much to see and do for those who don’t take weed as seriously as competitive growers. If you’re looking for cool things to experience while getting a little high, try one of these excellent destinations.
What To Do In Alberta
If you’re someone who enjoys cannabis in the great outdoors, some of the top destinations on your must-do list when visiting Alberta are Banff National Park, Lake Louise and Jasper National Park. Lake Louise is the picturesque crown jewel of Banff, a key part of the oldest national park in Canada. Jasper National Park is no slouch, though, offering a ton of Rocky Mountain fun: camping, hiking, skiing, glaciers and tall peaks. Keep your eyes peeled for some of the local wildlife, including bears, moose, elk, and bighorn sheep.
It’s not all Rocky Mountain highs, though! You can enter the heart of what’s known as “Dinosaur Valley” with a visit to Drumheller. Right in the middle of the Canadian Badlands, you can transport yourself back millions of years to when dinosaurs roamed this part of the globe. Make sure to check out the World’s Largest Dinosaur!
Users must exercise caution when attempting any of these destinations, whether they’re high or not. Don’t try anything outside your physical comfort zone, and don’t take a THC product if you need to navigate precarious pathways. If the hikes through these parks wear you out, save your weed for relaxation afterwards. You can get high and ease your aching bones in the natural mineral water of the Banff Upper Hot Springs, the hottest of the local hot springs.
If you’re in the mood for some urban getaways, you can’t beat the range of culture and attractions found in Edmonton and Calgary. Edmonton has great options for urban exploration: North America’s biggest mall, the Overklocked Internet Gaming Cafe for weed enthusiasts who also love gaming, and an incredible range of cuisines to satisfy the munchies. In Calgary – other than the world-famous Stampede – take in a Flames game or stroll down 17th Ave and the Entertainment District.
What To Know Before Buying Cannabis In Alberta
The minimum age for purchase and possession of cannabis is 18, the lowest in Canada. Anyone under 18 caught with five grams or fewer will face sanctions similar to those for underage possession of alcohol or tobacco.
Generally, Albertans can’t smoke cannabis in any place where smoking tobacco is already prohibited. You can’t smoke cannabis on hospital, school or child care facility properties. Nor can you smoke it within five metres from a playground, sports field, skateboard park, zoo, outdoor theatre, or outdoor pool or spray park.
Pay attention to local municipal rules. In Edmonton, for instance, you can’t smoke or vape cannabis within 10 metres from building doors, windows and patios – the same as tobacco. You may end up with a fine of $250! In Calgary, consuming cannabis is not permitted in any public spaces but is allowed on private property.
